Short description

Humans on spaceship named "Tantra" are exploring the unknown part of the Universe. The spaceship gets trapped by the mysterious Iron Star, and the Iron Star's powerful force of gravity is to hold the spaceship for 20 years. The humans are facing a very tough survival challenge.

What's left behind the scenes

  • The film's plot is interrupted at the moment the victorious starship returns to Triton. The second part of the movie, where hearts unite and the meaning of the title—a dream of intergalactic travel—is revealed, was not filmed due to the death of Sergei Stolyarov.
  • The visual quality of the film is extremely high; despite the lack of computer special effects, almost all episodes are quite spectacular. As an interesting detail related to the film, one can note an object on Dar Vetra's desk that matches a modern laptop in size, appearance, and purpose.
  • The original title was "The Andromeda Nebula. Part 1. Prisoners of the Iron Star."
  • An adaptation of the novel "The Andromeda Nebula" by Ivan Antonovich Efremov.
  • There are at least two versions of the film: the first, the "full" 1967 version, running 75 minutes and beginning with the words "To you, living in the twentieth century. To you, living in the first century of the communist era — dedicated"; and the second, "restored" in 1980, re-edited and shortened to 68 minutes, in which some episodes and all mentions of the "communist era" were cut, and the actors' original voices were redubbed.
  • The "earthly" scenes of the film were shot at the Artek pioneer camp.
