As bodies begin dropping around the Hollywood set of STAB 3, the third film based on the gruesome Woodsboro killings, Sidney and other survivors are once again terrorized by another Ghostface killer.
What's left behind the scenes
- Rules for the final film in the horror trilogy: 1) The killer possesses superhuman abilities. He cannot simply be stabbed or shot. 2) Anyone, including the main heroine, can die. 3) The film will have an unexpected plot twist revealing the past of the main character.
- The studio deliberately avoided test screenings, fearing leaks of the plot and numerous spoilers. The actors and crew first saw the finished version of the film only at the premiere.
- Kate Winslet, Shannen Doherty, and Charisma Carpenter were considered for the role of Cici. Ultimately, the role went to Kelly Rutherford.
- The filmmakers wanted to bring back Jamie Kennedy's character, Randy; it was assumed he had survived the events of the second film. But ultimately, the idea was considered far-fetched. However, Randy does appear in the film: with a message to his friends in a video recording he managed to make in case he became the killer's victim.
- Neve Campbell was simultaneously filming 'Scream 3', 'Lost Highway' (2000), and 'The 5th Wave'. Because her character in 'Lost Highway' had long hair, she had to wear a special wig for the role of Sidney.
- Ehren Kruger had to rewrite the script urgently after filming had already begun.
- Shortly before filming began on the movie, Courteney Cox and David Arquette got married.
- Compared to its predecessors, the third film featured the least amount of blood spilled – 10 gallons. The first film had 50 gallons, and the second had 30.
- The house where much of the second half of the film takes place belongs to Randall Kleiser, the director of 'Grease' (1978).
- The studio carefully guarded the film's plot, so journalists were not allowed on set. The first screening of the film for journalists was organized just two days before its premiere.
- Carrie Fisher was dissatisfied with her character's lines, so she asked the screenwriter to rewrite her dialogue and actively helped him with the process.
- Wes Craven agreed to direct for the third time only if Miramax Studios gave the green light to 'Music of the Heart' (1999).
- The film's initial website was entirely dedicated to Sunrise Studios, a fictional studio where 'Stab 3' was filmed. The site also featured filmographies and biographies of the actors in 'Stab 3', and a list of the studio's future projects.
- The film's director, Wes Craven, can be seen in the scene with Jay and Silent Bob. He is standing behind them.
- The person responsible for the special effects on the set of 'Stab 3' is named Stan. This is a possible nod to the legendary special effects creator Stan Winston.
- The house used for filming the final scene, where most of the murders in the film take place, was also used for filming the school in "Halloween: 20 Years Later" (1998).
- The name of the cinematographer of "Scream 3" is written on the operator's chair during the filming of "Stab 3," the film within a film in "Scream 3," Peter Diming.

- Throughout the film, Sidney wears Greek letters around her neck, a gift from Derek (her boyfriend in "Scream 2" (1997)).
- Jay and Silent Bob, popular characters from Kevin Smith's films, can be spotted as tourists at Sunrise Studios. Upon seeing Gale Weathers, they mistake her for Connie Chang.
- In the US, the film set a record for the number of theaters on its opening weekend – 3467. In 2001, this record was broken by 'Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone' (3762 theaters).
- The bathroom where Sidney finds Angelina during the filming of Stab 3 is the same bathroom used for the scene where Sidney flees the killer in Scream.
- The gun that Sidney takes from the detective's table is a FIE Titan. When, at the killer’s request, Sidney retrieves the hidden weapon and throws it into the pool, she is holding a Beretta 950 Jetfire.
- Neve Campbell signed a special agreement stipulating that all scenes involving her had to be filmed within 20 days. This explains why she isn't as prominently featured as the main character as she was in the previous two films.
- During his video message, Randy repeatedly mentions the Star Wars trilogy. Carrie Fisher, who played Princess Leia in the Star Wars trilogy, had a cameo role in Scream 3, playing Bianca, the studio archive keeper.
- Throughout the film, the actors repeatedly talk about the constant rewriting of the script and three different endings for "Stab 3." The script for "Scream 3" was also rewritten several times, and the film's screenwriter came up with three different endings.
- Patrick Dempsey was cast in the role one day before filming began.
- Parker Posey wears the same green outfit that Courteney Cox wore in the first film.
- Wes Craven shot three different endings and did not tell the actors which one he intended to include in the final cut.
- The song 'Red Right Hand' has been used in all three films.
