Short description

It's 1649: Mazarin hires the impoverished D'Artagnan to find the other musketeers: Cromwell has overthrown the English king, so Mazarin fears revolt, particularly from the popular Beaufort. Porthos, bored with riches and wanting a title, signs on, but Aramis, an abbé, and Athos, a brawler raising an intellectual son, assist Beaufort in secret. When they fail to halt Beaufort's escape from prison, the musketeers are expendable, and Mazarin sends them to London to rescue Charles I. They are also pursued by Justine, the avenging daughter of Milady de Winter, their enemy 20 years ago. They must escape England, avoid Justine, serve the Queen, and secure Beauford's political reforms.

What's left behind the scenes

With the exception of the minor character of the executioner from Lille, the same actors who appeared in the first two films participated in the third part.
Philippe Noiret starred in another film based on Alexandre Dumas' works about the Musketeers, "The Daughter of D'Artagnan" (1994), where he played D'Artagnan.

Charlton Heston wanted to appear on screen again as Cardinal Richelieu, but by the time the film's action takes place (1648), Richelieu had already died. Director Richard Lester ordered a portrait of Richelieu to be painted, using Heston as the model. (The portrait can be seen on screen at the beginning of the film.) After filming concluded, the portrait was solemnly presented to Heston as a gift.
On September 19, 1988, during filming in Toledo, Spain, Roy Kinneir fell from a horse, shattering his pelvis, and passed away the following day in a Madrid hospital. Prior to the accident, Kinneir had repeatedly objected to being filmed on horseback because he did not know how to stay in a saddle and, consequently, had no riding experience. He requested a stunt double for this scene specifically because he was afraid of falling, but no double could be found, and he was forced to perform the scene himself, which led to the tragic outcome.
Jean-Pierre Cassel, who played Louis XIII in the other films of the trilogy, appears in this film in a cameo role as Cyrano de Bergerac.
