Short description

Old woodcarver Geppetto fashions a wooden puppet, Pinocchio, who magically comes to life. Pinocchio longs for adventure and is easily led astray, encountering magical beasts, fantastical spectacles, while making friends and foes along his journey. However, his dream is to become a real boy, which can only come true if he finally changes his ways.

What's left behind the scenes

  • After several adaptations of the story about the wooden boy aimed at family viewing, director Matteo Garrone decided to revive the dark atmosphere and satirical tone of Carlo Collodi's (1826-1890) original novel, "The Adventures of Pinocchio: The Story of a Puppet" (1881), along with its scenes of cruelty and extreme poverty. According to Garrone, the film's content was criticized during previews, mainly by adults, while children generally accepted the on-screen violence and depictions of poverty as a matter of course.
  • According to Matteo Garrone, the most difficult scenes to shoot were those in Toyland. Dozens of children were released onto the set, and instead of playing with each other, they started fighting over the toys. As Garrone later recounted, it looked more like a battlefield than a playground.
  • Applying Federico Ielapi's makeup, who played Pinocchio, took 3 hours.
  • Director Matteo Garrone paid 113,000 euros out of his own pocket for the English dub of the film.
