After an untimely death, a newly dead New England couple seek help from a deranged demon exorcist to scare an affluent New York family out of their home.
What's left behind the scenes
- Tim Burton was only 30 years old when he was working on the film. Michael Keaton's filming took just two weeks. His screen time was just over 17 minutes.
- The initial script was quite dark and serious. It was supposed to be a moralistic drama about the ghosts of people whose souls could not find peace in heaven.
- “Miss Argentina” Patrice Martinez starred in an episodic role as the receptionist in the heavenly waiting room.
- The film features songs by Harry Belafonte.
- Winona Ryder initially refused to participate in the film, seeing satanic motifs in the script.
- In the film’s finale, Beetlejuice transforms into a strange creature with a carousel on his head. At the top of the carousel is a laughing skull, which would become Jack Skellington in “The Nightmare Before Christmas” (1993).
- The studio didn't like the title "Beetlejuice," and they wanted to call the film "House Ghosts."
- The literal translation of this film's title is "Beetle Juice," as the name of the "live exorcism specialist" (Betelgeuse) is pronounced the same in English as the film's title. It's simply a play on words.
