When Alita awakens with no memory of who she is in a future world she does not recognize, she is taken in by Ido, a compassionate doctor who realizes that somewhere in this abandoned cyborg shell is the heart and soul of a young woman with an extraordinary past.

- Producer James Cameron and director Robert Rodriguez considered four actresses for the lead role: Zendaya, Rosa Salazar, Maia Monroe, and Bella Thorne. Ultimately, Salazar was cast in the role.
- Actors Evan Jogia, Douglas Booth, Jack Lowden, and Noah Silver were considered for the role of Hugo.
