Short description

Little Women is a coming-of-age drama tracing the lives of four sisters: Meg, Jo, Beth and Amy. During the American Civil War, the girls father is away serving as a minister to the troops. The family, headed by their beloved Marmee, must struggle to make ends meet, with the help of their kind and wealthy neighbor, Mr. Laurence, and his high spirited grandson Laurie.

What's left behind the scenes

  • Walter Plunkett had to urgently alter Joan Bennett's (1910-1990) dresses to conceal the actress's pregnancy. At the time she was cast, she managed to hide the fact that she was pregnant from director George Cukor (1899-1983).
  • Katharine Hepburn (1907-2003) asked costume designer Walter Plunkett (1902-1982) to make her a dress exactly like the one her grandmother was depicted wearing in one of the photographs taken using the "tintype" process (a photographic process that uses metal plates coated with dark lacquer and light-sensitive collodion).
