Short description

The life of celebrated but reclusive author J.D. Salinger, who gained worldwide fame with the publication of his novel The Catcher in the Rye.

What's left behind the scenes

  • The plot of the film 'Catcher in the Rye' is based on Kenneth Slawenski’s biography of J. D. Salinger, titled 'J. D. Salinger: A Life'.
  • Many biographies of Jerome Salinger mention that as early as the 1950s, the writer forbade any film adaptation of his work. Many respected figures in Hollywood – Steven Spielberg, Jack Nicholson, Terrence Malick, Leonardo DiCaprio – tried to persuade Salinger to make an exception, but all attempts were unsuccessful. Jerome Salinger remained committed to his belief that no director and no actor could fully and deeply portray the troubled hero of his book, Holden Caulfield, on screen.
  • The directorial debut of actor and screenwriter Danny Strong.
