Short description

Accomplished sailor Charlie St. Cloud has the adoration of his mother Claire and his little brother Sam, as well as a college scholarship that will lead him far from his sleepy Pacific Northwest hometown. But his bright future is cut short when tragedy strikes and takes his dreams with it. After high school classmate Tess returns home unexpectedly, Charlie grows torn between honoring a promise he made four years earlier and moving forward with newfound love. As he finds the courage to let go of the past for good, Charlie discovers the soul most worth saving is his own.

What's left behind the scenes

  • The film is based on Ben Sherwood's novel "The Death and Life of Charlie St. Cloud" (2004).
  • Zac Efron spent three weeks learning to sail. He became so proficient at handling sails that he didn't even need a stunt double for long shots.
  • Ray Liotta agreed to star in the film mainly because of his ten-year-old daughter, who really wanted to meet Zac Efron. Kim Basinger decided to take on a role in the film for the same reason – at her daughter’s request.
  • The town where the main character's family lives was filmed in four locations near Vancouver.
  • Lindsey Lohan was considered for the role of Tess and even auditioned. Producers decided to cast Amanda Crew when they realized Lohan would be uninsurable due to ongoing legal proceedings and her overall reputation.
  • The film is based on Ben Sherwood's novel 'The Death and Life of Charlie St. Cloud' (2004).
