Short description

Norway, 1204. A civil war between the birkebeiners —the king's men— and the baglers —supporters of the Norwegian aristocracy and the Church— ravages the country. Two men must protect a baby, the illegitimate son of King Håkon, who will be the future king and peacemaker, from those who want to kill him.

What's left behind the scenes

  • The film features the kings of Norway from the era of the civil wars of the 12th and 13th centuries. These are Haakon III Sverresson, Inge II Bårdsson, and Haakon IV the Old.
  • The character named Gisle was based on a real historical figure: the Norwegian jarl Haakon the Mad. The filmmakers gave him a different name because the plot already included both Haakon and Håkon. Jarl Haakon was never an enemy of his brother Inge, although their relationship was indeed strained.
