What's left behind the scenes

Robert Altman shot a vast amount of footage at actual fashion shows in Paris. Afterwards, Altman and screenwriter Barbara Shulgaesser inserted plot lines into the filmed material.
Due to a line spoken by a character played by Forest Whitaker, fashion designer Karl Lagerfeld (1933-2019) sued the filmmakers, preventing the film from being released in Germany. The film eventually premiered, but only after the word 'thief' in the line was censored.
According to Richard E. Grant, he based his portrayal of Kurt Rommey, to some extent, on British fashion designer Vivienne Westwood.
