Short description

A hard-working mother inches towards disaster as she divorces her husband and starts a successful restaurant business to support her spoiled daughter.

What's left behind the scenes

  • The film's release was deliberately delayed until September 1945 in the hope that it would be better received by audiences in the post-war situation.
  • After hearing stories at MGM Studios about Joan Crawford's (1905-1977) behavior, the film's director, Michael Curtiz (1886-1962), began to wonder if it was worth casting her in the lead role. However, the actress wanted to play this role so much that she even offered to hold screen tests (which were not usually held for popular actors and actresses already well-known to the public). Curtiz agreed, held screen tests, and realized that Crawford was indeed perfect for the part.
  • In the novel of the same name (1941) by James M. Cain (1892-1977), which served as the literary basis for the screenplay, there was no murder. The screenplay was changed and a murder was included, riding on the success of Billy Wilder's (1906-2002) film noir 'Double Indemnity,' which was released in 1944.
