Short description

A meek bank clerk who oversees the shipments of bullion joins with an eccentric neighbor to steal gold bars and smuggle them out of the country.

What's left behind the scenes

  • The Ealing Studios film company turned to the Bank of England with a request to develop a robbery plan for the screenwriters, by means of which it would be possible to remove a million pounds sterling from the vault. The plot was based on a plan developed by bank specialists.
  • Sir Alec Guinness was greatly impressed by Audrey Hepburn's performance, although she was initially intended to play a more significant role in the film. The episodic role of Chiquita is considered the actress's first role in major cinema.
