An introverted man receives an anonymous letter from an ex-lover informing him that he has a son who may be looking for him. A freelance sleuth neighbor motivates the man to embark on a cross-country search for his past flames, seeking answers.
What's left behind the scenes
- Jarmusch dedicated the film to the late French film director Jean Eustache.
- Jim Jarmusch asked the four actresses playing the main roles to write a version of the letter in the pink envelope from the perspective of their characters, and used excerpts from all four versions in the film.
- Bill Murray only agreed to star in the film on the condition that the shooting location be within an hour's drive of his home in New York State. Jarmusch agreed, and filming took place either in New York City itself or in northern New Jersey.
- Jim Jarmusch wrote the role of Don Johnston specifically for Bill Murray, whom he admires. He had initially planned to feature Bill in another film, but changed his plans.
