Short description

A warlock burned at the stake comes back and takes over the body of his great grandson to take his revenge on the descendents of the villages that burned him.

What's left behind the scenes

  • Roger Corman wanted to cast Boris Karloff in the film, but he declined the offer due to health reasons, so Lon Chaney Jr. appeared in the picture instead.
  • Additional monologues were written by Francis Ford Coppola.
  • The film is based on H.P. Lovecraft’s book “The Case of Charles Dexter Ward.” But since Lovecraft was little known at the time, the studio claimed for promotional purposes that the film was based on the works of the more famous Edgar Allan Poe. This allowed the film to be included in Corman’s popular series of films based on Poe’s works.
