The Coast Guard makes a daring rescue attempt off the coast of Cape Cod after a pair of oil tankers are destroyed during a blizzard in 1952.

- An old model police car used in the film was borrowed from the Orleans, Massachusetts, city police.
- In 2011, the U.S. Coast Guard named a 46-meter high-speed boat of a new design after Boatswain's Mate Bernard Webber of CG 36500. These boats were the first vessels to be named after enlisted personnel.
- Filming took place primarily in the town of Chatham, Massachusetts.
- The film's screenplay is based on the book by Michael J. Tagias and Casey Sherman, “The Finest Hours: The True Story of the U.S. Coast Guard's Most Daring Sea Rescue.”
