Short description

A biographical portrait of a pre-fame Jane Austen and her romance with a young Irishman.

What's left behind the scenes

  • The role of Judge Langlois was the last in the acting career of renowned British actor Ian Richardson, who passed away on February 9, 2007.
  • More than 300 extras were used in the ball scene. The Irish Minister of Arts, John O'Donoghue, was present during its filming.
  • During the filming of the opening scene, the piano Jane is playing was actually not working. The sound was added later to match the actress's finger movements with the music.
  • For her role in the film, Anne Hathaway learned to play the piano and worked specifically with a dialect coach.
  • Only two opening shots of the film were filmed in England. All the rest of the filming process, from beginning to end, took place in Ireland, in Dublin and the surrounding rural areas.
  • Other candidates for the role of Jane Austen were Kate Winslet, Natalie Portman, and Keira Knightley.
  • Higginsbrook House, used in filming as the Ousten family's estate, which was destroyed in 1824, was built in the first half of the 18th century. The house is located in County Meath and was soon reused for filming the television film 'Northanger Abbey'.
  • The events depicted in the film unfold around 1795.
  • Many of the costumes seen in the film had already been used in other films about the same era, such as “Sense and Sensibility” (1995), “Pride & Prejudice” (2005), “Marie Antoinette” (2006), and “Northanger Abbey” (2007).
