Short description

An intense and imaginative artist, revered Dutch painter Vincent van Gogh possesses undeniable talent, but he is plagued by mental problems and frustrations with failure. Supported by his brother, Theo, the tormented Van Gogh eventually leaves Holland for France, where he meets volatile fellow painter Paul Gauguin and struggles to find greater inspiration.

What's left behind the scenes

  • Some scenes of the film were shot in Auvers-sur-Oise, where Vincent van Gogh (1853-1890) lived and died. Kirk Douglas (1916-2020) specifically styled his hair to match the artist's and dyed it the same color. Some elderly residents of the town even believed that Van Gogh himself had returned.
  • The film is based on the novel of the same name by Irving Stone.
  • Director Vincente Minnelli (1903-1986) ordered part of the field to be painted yellow to make it more similar to a painting by Van Gogh.
  • Watching from the audience the scene in which Van Gogh supposedly cuts off his ear, a very young Michael Douglas and his brother Joel were frightened and fled the cinema screaming in horror.
