This marks Warren Beatty and his wife Annette Bening's first joint on-screen appearance in over 20 years since the release of Glenn Gordon Caron’s melodrama "Love Affair" (1994).
Rooney Mara and Felicity Jones both turned down the offer to play the role eventually performed by Lily Collins.
The dialogue between the characters played by Lily Collins and Annette Bening in the scene in the back of the car is largely improvised.
The film's plot unfolds in 1958 and 1964.
