Short description

In 1840s New York, the uneventful and boring days of the daughter of a wealthy doctor come to an end when she meets a dashing poorer man — who may or may not be after her inheritance.

What's left behind the scenes

  • In an attempt to achieve a weary look for Olivia de Havilland in one scene, director William Wyler (1902-1981) filled a couple of suitcases with books and made the actress carry them up the stairs.
  • Montgomery Clift (1920-1966) was so disappointed with the film that he left the premiere.
  • In an attempt to make Olivia de Havilland look exhausted in one scene, director William Wyler filled two suitcases with books and forced the actress to carry them up the stairs.
