Short description

A lighthouse keeper and his wife living off the coast of Western Australia raise a baby they rescue from an adrift rowboat.

What's left behind the scenes

  • Filming took place in Stanley, a small coastal town in northwestern Tasmania. Some key scenes were filmed in the port of Chalmers, a port and suburb of Dunedin. The film is largely set on a lighthouse at Cape Campbell in Marlborough (one of the regions of New Zealand). The film crew and actors lived there during the 5.5-week shoot.
  • Michael Fassbender and Alicia Vikander admitted that during filming, the film's director Derek Cianfrance suggested placing their trailers next to each other.
  • Under the agreement, this is the last film from DreamWorks to be distributed by Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures under the Touchstone label.
  • Lucy, also known as Grace Rutherford, was played by five actresses – twins Elliot and Evangeline Newberry (Lucy/Grace as a baby), Georgie Gascoine (Lucy/Grace at 1 year old), Florence Clery (Lucy/Grace as a child), and Karen Pistorius (adult Lucy/Grace).
  • A farmer from the surrounding area, Stanley Ritchie Wells, received a role in the film and starred alongside his team of oxen, which he had trained for 5 years beforehand.
  • The novel is set in Western Australia (the largest state, occupying a third of the continent's territory). However, filming for some scenes of the film took place in Dunedin, the second largest city on the South Island of New Zealand, the administrative center of the Otago region. All the characters in the film are Australian, but none of the actors involved in the film were born in Australia.
  • Students from the local University of Otago, the oldest in the country, were involved in the mass scenes in Dunedin.
  • The film is based on M.L. Stedman’s novel "The Light Between Oceans".
  • Having met on the set of the film “The Light Between Oceans” in September 2014, Alicia Vikander and Michael Fassbender announced their relationship in December of the same year.
  • For the filming of the movie in Stanley, a pier was specially constructed and “aged.” Many local residents, hired as extras, grew beards, as was customary for men in the 1920s.
  • Alicia Vikander admitted that she agreed to star in “The Light Between Oceans” because she had always been a devoted fan of Michael Fassbender.
