Short description
Set against Paris' oldest bridge, the Pont Neuf, while it was closed for repairs, this film is a love story between two young vagrants: Alex, a would be circus performer addicted to alcohol and sedatives and Michele, a painter driven to a life on the streets because of a failed relationship and an affliction which is slowly turning her blind.
What's left behind the scenes
- More than half the budget was spent recreating the celebratory fireworks display for the bicentennial of the French Revolution on July 14, 1989.
- Initially, director Leos Carax received official permission to film on the Pont Neuf bridge in Paris (the oldest surviving bridge there across the Seine, built in the 16th-17th centuries). However, the permit expired before filming even began, so the bridge had to be built from scratch on a lake near Montpellier. The construction of a replica of the Pont Neuf and the facades of the surrounding buildings made this film one of the most expensive in the history of French cinema.
