- In preparation for filming, Richard Gere, director Mike Figgis, and screenwriter Eric Roth studied manic-depressive psychosis (now known as bipolar disorder) extensively and thoroughly. As part of his preparation for the role, Gere even met with people suffering from this mental illness.
