Short description
After a lightning bolt zaps a robot named Number 5, the lovable machine starts to think he's human and escapes the lab. Hot on his trail is his designer, Newton, who hopes to get to Number 5 before the military does. In the meantime, a spunky animal lover mistakes the robot for an alien and takes him in, teaching her new guest about life on Earth.
What's left behind the scenes
- When Stephanie gives a quick interview, the film's director John Badham can be seen operating the camera (a.k.a. a cameo appearance).
- During filming, “Johnny 5” was controlled by remote control. And the operating technicians spoke for the robot on camera to make it easier for the actors to imagine a sentient robot.
- A video game was created based on the film.
- The 'Johnny 5' robot was the most expensive item in the film's budget. The remaining costs were not as significant.
- The robot couldn't move fast enough, so its footage had to be sped up during editing.
- The most famous line from the film became: 'Life is not a malfunction.'
