Short description
A group of Boston-bred gangsters set up shop in balmy Florida during the Prohibition era, facing off against the competition and the Ku Klux Klan.
What's left behind the scenes
- Filming began on October 28, 2015. In mid-November, filming took place in Lawrence, and also in Boston on November 20th. From the beginning of December 2015, filming took place in Los Angeles.
- Adam Driver, Chris Messina, and John Bernthal were considered for roles in the film.
- This is the second time Ben Affleck has directed a film adaptation of a Dennis Lehane novel, since the release of "Gone Baby Gone" (2007).
- Ben Affleck decided to postpone this project to star in David Fincher's “Gone Girl” (2014). According to Affleck, he had always been looking for an opportunity to work with this director.
- Jennifer Lawrence and Lindsay Lohan were considered for the leading female roles.
- This is the second time, after "The Town" (2010), that Chris Cooper has been involved in a project where Ben Affleck is both director and actor.
- Cinematographer Robert Richardson intended to shoot the film using anamorphic lenses in Ultra Panavision 70 format, as he did with “The Hateful Eight” (2015), however, Panavision had already leased them for the filming of “Rogue One: A Star Wars Story” (2016).
- Ben Affleck's fourth film as director.
- Leonardo DiCaprio was considered for the lead role of Joe Coughlin, but the actor decided to limit himself to a producer role.
- Initially, the novel's author, Lehane, was concerned that Ben Affleck was not suitable for the role of Joe Coughlin, believing that an actor with such on-screen charisma would struggle to convey the protagonist's underlying treachery and shame. However, to his credit, Affleck did not deem it beneath him to audition for the role, apparently dispelling all the author's fears.
- This is the second film adaptation of a Dennis Lehane novel produced by Leonardo DiCaprio, following the thriller "Shutter Island" (2009).
