Short description

Pursued by the big-time gambler he robbed, John Muller assumes a new identity—with unfortunate results.

What's left behind the scenes

  • For the role of Henreid's secretary, he initially wanted to cast Evelyn Keyes. When he asked the head of "Columbia Pictures," Larry Cohen, to loan Keyes to "Eagle-Lion" for one film, Cohen was so impressed with the script that he tried to bring the picture to his own studio. However, Henreid had already signed a contract with "Eagle-Lion" and was forced to decline, depriving him of the opportunity to work with Keyes. Henreid then turned to Joan Bennett. She and Lang had just experienced a major flop with "Secret Behind the Door" (1947) and desperately needed a hit. Therefore, she was willing to take a risk and try her luck with an independent studio like "Eagle-Lion."
