Short description

In 19th-century France, doctor's wife Emma Bovary seeks to escape her dull provincial life through various extramarital affairs and extravagant spending, leading to tragic consequences.

What's left behind the scenes

  • The film is based on Gustave Flaubert's novel “Madame Bovary” (1856). After the novel was published in a journal, the author was accused of offending public morals and brought to trial. The scandalous notoriety of the work made it popular, and the acquittal on February 7, 1857, allowed for the novel’s publication as a separate book later that year.
