After a road accident in Hungary, the American honeymooners Joan and Peter and the enigmatic Dr. Werdegast find refuge in the house of the famed architect Hjalmar Poelzig, who shares a dark past with the doctor.
What's left behind the scenes
- The main character was named after architect Hans Polzig, with whom Edgar G. Ulmer (according to his own account) worked on the set design for the film "The Golem: How He Came Into the World" in 1920. The image of the occultist was based on the famous Aleister Crowley.
- The film's title references Edgar Allan Poe's story "The Black Cat," although the plots of these works are essentially unrelated.
