Short description

George has been in a mental hospital for 3 years and is finally ready to go out into the real world again. Eddie Dash, a dedicated con-man, is supposed to keep him out of trouble, but when people begin to recognise George as a missing millionaire, Eddie wants to take advantage of the situation.

What's left behind the scenes

To prepare for the role, Richard Pryor (1940-2005) spent three weeks learning the walk of his character, who had lost the ability to walk properly due to illness. In some scenes, you can even see that Pryor is being supported, otherwise he would simply fall into the camera.
Originally, the film was intended to take place in New York City. Preparation for filming lasted two months, while the actual filming in New York took two weeks. On the last day of filming (already nearing midnight), director Peter Bogdanovich (1939-2022) received notice that he had been replaced by Maurice Phillips (1948-2012). Bogdanovich and Phillips reviewed all the footage shot in New York and realized it was unusable for the film. The script was rewritten, and the entire film was shot in Los Angeles.
