What's left behind the scenes

Scenes set in Lawrence, Kansas, were actually filmed in Pattonsburg, Missouri. The town was flooded in 1993, and its population abandoned it.
According to Jewel Kilcher, director Ang Lee cast her as Sue largely because of her crooked front teeth. The director felt that this is exactly what the teeth of a woman living in poverty in the 1860s should look like.
