Short description

During the Nazi occupation of Czechoslovakia, surgeon Dr. Franticek Svoboda, a Czech patriot, assassinates the brutal "Hangman of Europe", Reichsprotektor Reinhard Heydrich, and is wounded in the process. In his attempt to escape, he is helped by history professor Stephen Novotny and his daughter Mascha.

What's left behind the scenes

  • In the 1950s, during the height of the 'Red Scare' launched by Senator Joseph McCarthy (1908-1957), the film was considered subversive according to a decision by the House Un-American Activities Committee because its lines could be interpreted as 'pro-communist.' The screenwriter John Wexley (1907-1985) was blacklisted and his name was not even mentioned in the United States until the mid-1970s.
  • The plot of the film was inspired by the assassination of Reinhard Heydrich (1904-1942) by Czechoslovak resistance fighters and the subsequent reprisals.
