Short description
An investigator from the War Crimes Commission travels to Connecticut to find an infamous Nazi, who may be hiding out in a small town in the guise of a distinguished professor engaged to the Supreme Court Justice’s daughter.
What's left behind the scenes
- The New England town, including the church and its clock tower almost 38 meters high, was built on the United Artists studio lot in Los Angeles.
- The scene where Charles lifts Mary with one hand up the stairs to the clock tower was filmed live. Loretta Young (1913-2000) later recounted that during the filming of this scene, her legs were dangling 15 meters above the ground without a safety net. The actress was held by a rope threaded through her sleeve and attached to a safety belt at her waist (in case the stuntman holding her released his grip). After several takes, the actress, without informing the director, ordered the rope to be removed, as it constantly slipped out of her sleeve. The take that made it into the film was shot immediately after that.
- The first mainstream American film to show footage of Hitler's concentration camps after World War II (1939-1945).
- The film entered the public domain in the US due to a failure to renew its copyright in 1973.
- Orson Welles (1915-1985) initially wanted Agnes Moorehead (1900-1974) to play the role of the federal agent, but the studio executives vetoed the idea and insisted on Edward G. Robinson (1893-1973) for the part.
