- In reality, Gary Cooper (1901-1961) was not a baseball fan. He had to be painstakingly trained for a long time to look convincing on the baseball field. He had never played baseball before filming this movie (not even in his youth) and had never watched baseball games live.
- Teresa Wright (1918-2005), who played Lou Gehrig's (1903-1941) wife, wore the very bracelet he had given his wife Eleanor Gehrig (1904-1984) on their fourth wedding anniversary. The bracelet was engraved with a dedication and the date – September 29, 1937. The bracelet is now on display at the National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum in Cooperstown, New York.
