Short description

In 1930s Shanghai, 'The White Countess' is both Sofia, a fallen member of the exiled Russian aristocracy, and a nightclub created by a blind American diplomat who asks Sofia to be the centerpiece of the world he wants to create.

What's left behind the scenes

Footage from Gary Ross's sports drama "Seabiscuit" (2003) was used in the horse racing scene.
Preparing for the role of Todd Jackson, Ralph Fiennes sought the assistance of the Royal National Institute of Blind People and observed blind individuals. Before every take, he wore special glasses that left him completely unable to see.
The final film by James Ivory, produced by his longtime friend Ismail Merchant, who passed away shortly before the movie's premiere.
The film is set in 1936, but the American flag flying over the racecourse has 50 stars instead of 48.
Given that the film takes place in 1936-1937, the Japanese Army uniforms are depicted incorrectly. Personnel only began wearing insignia on their collars in May 1938; until then, insignia were located on the shoulder straps. Additionally, the khaki color was darker than shown in the film. The Japanese flag should have featured a chrysanthemum rather than the rising sun.
