Matt Johnson was based on the real-life surfer Lance Carson, who struggled with an excessive fondness for alcohol in the 1960s and 1970s.
George Lucas and Steven Spielberg believed that this film would be such a hit that they bet on it with director John Milius for a share of the profits from their future films 'Star Wars: Episode IV – A New Hope' (1977) and 'Close Encounters of the Third Kind' (1977). In the end, Milius earned millions on the bet, as his own film flopped at the box office.
