- J.J. Abrams named the planet Kijimi after a Japanese synthesizer.
- Initially, George Lucas thought about filming 12 episodes, but later reduced the number to 9 and stated that the only characters to appear in all 9 episodes would be the droids. That is exactly what happened. Anakin Skywalker and Obi-Wan Kenobi, the only ones to appear in all the films of the original trilogy and the prequel trilogy, were absent from the sequel trilogy. Only Anthony Daniels, the actor who played C-3PO, appeared in all nine episodes.
- The first film in the series shot on 65mm film.
- Colin Trevorrow was originally intended to direct the film, but due to creative differences with the studio, he stepped down as director while remaining as a screenwriter; he was replaced by J.J. Abrams, who had already worked with LucasFilm on the seventh episode of the saga, 'Star Wars: The Force Awakens'.

- On November 25, 2019, news appeared that the film's script had surfaced online. An actor (later revealed to be John Boyega) allegedly forgot the script under a bed when moving to another room.
