Short description

Michael Collins plays a crucial role in the establishment of the Irish Free State in the 1920s, but becomes vilified by those hoping to create a completely independent Irish republic.

What's left behind the scenes

  • The film contains several scenes of graphic violence, but in Ireland it received a "PG" rating (children are recommended to watch with parents), largely due to its historical context. Censors issued a statement to the press calling the film a milestone in Irish cinema and emphasizing that, given the subject matter, parents should decide for themselves whether or not their children should see it.
  • Michael Collins (1890-1922) adopted the guerrilla tactics used by the Boers during the Second Boer War (1899-1902).
