Short description

The sole survivor of an interplanetary rescue mission discovers a planet ruled by apes, and an underground city run by telepathic humans.

What's left behind the scenes

The original plot featured a child – half-human, half-monkey. The producers decided to remove him – to avoid confusing viewers and risking a G rating (all ages admitted).
Charlton Heston was reluctant to return to his character from the first film of the franchise. He agreed only on the condition that all of his scenes be filmed within two weeks. He also insisted that his character die. Per the actor's agreement with the filmmakers, he disappears at the very beginning of the movie and reappears only at the end to meet his death.
Don Medford (1917-2012) was initially appointed as the film's director, but he walked out when the movie's budget was slashed by half.
Burt Reynolds was considered for the role of John Brent, but James Franciscus was ultimately cast due to his resemblance to Charlton Heston (1923-2008), who played Taylor in "Planet of the Apes" (Franklin Schaffner, 1968).
