Short description
Keith Nelson, an artsy high school outcast, tries to land a date with popular girl Amanda Jones with some help from his tomboy best friend, Watts. However, Watts realizes she likes Keith as more than just a friend and tries to convince him to stop pursuing Amanda. Matters are further complicated when Keith's invitation draws the ire of Amanda's rich yet snobby ex-boyfriend, Hardy Jenns, who makes plans to get even.

- Eric Stoltz and Lea Thompson had been friends long before filming, and it was actually Stoltz who convinced Lea to play the role of Amanda Jones—at the time, the actress was very distressed over the failure and negative reviews of her previous work in the film 'Howard the Duck'.
- While filming the movie, director Howard Deutsch met actress Lea Thompson; although she was in a relationship with Eric Stoltz at the time, Thompson and Deutsch married two years later.
- Martha Coolidge was originally the film's director. At Coolidge's suggestion, actress Kim Delaney was set to play Amanda Jones, and Kyle MacLachlan was to play Hardy Jenns. All three were fired at the last moment when Howard Deutch took over the director's chair.
