Daniel Lugo, manager of the Sun Gym in 1990s Miami, decides that there is only one way to achieve his version of the American dream: extortion. To achieve his goal, he recruits musclemen Paul and Adrian as accomplices. After several failed attempts, they abduct rich businessman Victor Kershaw and convince him to sign over all his assets to them. But when Kershaw makes it out alive, authorities are reluctant to believe his story.

- Specifically for his role as a bodybuilder in this film, Mark Wahlberg increased his weight to 96 kilograms.
- The car driven by Dwayne Johnson's character is a Plymouth Prowler. It began production in 1997, which is later than the events depicted in the film.
- During the chase after Dwayne Johnson following the failed armored car robbery, when he is swimming, he is shot in the left leg. In the water, he holds his left leg, but in the very next shot he is running along the pier with his right leg shot on the other side.
