A struggling female soprano finds work playing a male female impersonator, but it complicates her personal life.
What's left behind the scenes
- Ernest Day was initially slated to be the film's cinematographer.
- Robert Preston's final musical number was filmed in one take.
- The cockroaches were delivered to the set in a kind of "deep freeze." They were placed where they were needed for filming and thawed with hair dryers. Those involved in the filming process could only hope that the cockroaches would behave as required. No one knows where these cockroaches ran off to after the filming of the episode!
- Tom Selleck was originally supposed to play Marshan. However, by the time filming began, Selleck was fully booked with work on the popular series "Magnum, P.I." (1980-8), and the role went to James Garner.
- In one interview, director Blake Edwards confessed: when King Marshan first kissed Victor/Victoria, saying "I don't care if you're a man or a woman" in the first cut, he genuinely didn't know who he/she was. But fearing impropriety, Edwards inserted a scene in which King peeks at Victoria bathing, and thus learns about her sex in advance.
