The story of the early, murderous roots of the cannibalistic killer, Hannibal Lecter – from his hard-scrabble Lithuanian childhood, where he witnesses the repulsive lengths to which hungry soldiers will go to satiate themselves, through his sojourn in France, where as a medical student he hones his appetite for the kill.
What's left behind the scenes
- Director Peter Webber wanted to cast Swedish actor Mikael Persbrandt for the role of the soldier who eats Hannibal's younger sister, but it turned out he was already busy with a new project and was filming in Sweden.
- Thomas Newman was considered as the film's composer.
- When Hannibal Lecter administers thiopental sodium to himself, he plays Johann Sebastian Bach's famous "Goldberg Variations" – the same music that was featured in the escape scene with Lecter in "The Silence of the Lambs" (1991). In that film, a recording of pianist Glenn Gould's 1955 performance is used, while other films about Hannibal Lecter used a recording of the same Glenn Gould, but from 1981.
- 25 people are killed throughout the film.
- A prop severed head and a rubber penis were stolen from the set.
- Many young actors auditioned for the role of young Hannibal Lecter, including Hayden Christensen, Macaulay Culkin, Hugh Dancy, Rupert Friend, Dominic Cooper, Tom Sturridge, and Tom Payne.
- Actor Stephen Walters (Zigmas Milko) suffers from claustrophobia in real life.
