Short description
Trying to leave their troubled lives behind, twin brothers return to their hometown to start again, only to discover that an even greater evil is waiting to welcome them back.
What's left behind the scenes
- According to director and screenwriter Ryan Coogler, he was inspired by the films *From Dusk Till Dawn* and *The Faculty* while working on the film. In addition, he was significantly influenced by Stephen King's 1975 novel *The Stand* and one episode of *The Twilight Zone*.
- When Delroy Lindo read the script, he initially didn't perceive the future project as a horror film; in his opinion, it was a story about what happens to a community when an unholy force appears. Furthermore, Lindo described the script as 'raw,' and Coogler agreed with him.
- Remmik says that Christians took the land from his father. This means Remmik lived before the population of Ireland converted to Christianity, i.e., between the 5th and 7th centuries, and therefore he is over 1300 years old.
- Hailee Steinfeld and Wunmi Mosaku said that the fake blood they had to work with on set turned out to be very sticky, which no one had warned them about beforehand. Makeup artists repeatedly had to run to the actresses with water to wash off their 'bloody' fingers, which kept sticking to everything.
- Some of the costumes were originally created for the film 'Blade,' in an early version of which the action was supposed to take place in the 1920s. However, the film's production was halted, and the unnecessary costumes were sold to Ryan Coogler's filming crew.
- Hidden within the official film soundtrack on Spotify are links leading to a page with film images. There you can find 'clippings' from newspapers revealing the backstories of the characters. The Boston Daily Journal from August 1, 1911, reports that a damaged ship carrying migrants from Ireland arrived in the port of Boston. Traces of blood and charred bodies were found inside, with no survivors. The Clarksdale Herald from February 9, 1924, states that two black men, resembling each other and wearing masks, robbed a bank in Clarksdale, Mississippi. This followed a series of similar robberies. An article in the Chicago Daily Times from October 5, 1932, notes growing tensions between the Irish and Italian mafias in Chicago, with clashes between representatives of criminal groups. The conflict began after the disappearance of shipments of illegal alcohol – first from the Irish, and then from the Italians.
- According to director and screenwriter Ryan Coogler, he decided to make this film because of his own uncle, who lived in Mississippi in the 1930s. He instilled in his nephew a love for the blues.
- Yao (Bo Chow) was asked what Asian characters should be included in the dance scene, and he suggested the Monkey King.
- Considering that his character was supposed to play the guitar (something the actor had long dreamed of), Jack O’Connell agreed to participate in the project after the first reading of the script.
