What's left behind the scenes
- Glenn Powell asked the animation studio's management to let him voice Fox McCloud because he had always really liked this anthropomorphic fox.
- The giant dragon created by Bowser Jr. toward the end of the film is the dragon from the 2017 video game Super Mario Odyssey.
- The entire scene with the dinosaur is a direct copy of the Tyrannosaurus's death scene from Don Bluth's animated film The Land Before Time (1988).
- The weapon Bowser and Bowser Jr. use to turn Mario and Luigi into babies is based on the Super Scope 6, a weapon found in several Super Nintendo games.
- Glen Powell asked the animation studio's management to let him voice Nick Wilde because he had always been very fond of this anthropomorphic fox.
