A group of scientists in San Francisco struggle to stay alive in the aftermath of a plague that is wiping out humanity, while Caesar tries to maintain dominance over his community of intelligent apes.

- Terry Notary previously worked as a movement coach on the film "Planet of the Apes" (2001).
- Judy Greer's husband is a huge fan of the movie 'Planet of the Apes' (1968). In her interview, Greer mentioned that at their wedding, even the bride and groom toppers on the wedding cake were shaped like chimpanzees, and in the bar during cocktail hour, two televisions were showing the original film and 'Rise of the Planet of the Apes' (2011).
- This is the first "Planet of the Apes" film shot in a 1.85:1 aspect ratio.
- Actors Andy Serkis (Caesar) and Toby Kebbell (Koba) played King Kong.
