What's left behind the scenes
- Ellen Burstyn refused to reprise her role from the first part, and the filmmakers had to hire Kitty Winn, who played the protagonist's nanny.
- Linda Blair was long persuaded to star in the sequel, and she eventually agreed when she liked the script, but later expressed regret, as a result of numerous revisions it no longer resembled what she had originally signed on for, but she could not refuse due to the terms of her contract.
- Richard Burton agreed to participate only for the money and drank heavily during filming, while Linda Blair had drug problems and was regularly late for shifts.
- Stanley Kubrick declined an offer to direct the film and tried to dissuade John Burman.
- Linda Blair refused to wear the gruesome makeup from the first part, and a stunt double performed her role in the flashbacks.
- According to William Friedkin, at the pre-premiere screening, an enraged crowd of viewers chased the film's producers down the street. The director of the first part also did not appreciate the film.
- The scene with Regan on the edge of the balcony was not filmed in a studio – Linda Blair genuinely screamed in fear, and the director was fully aware that it would be impossible to catch the actress if she fell.
