Short description
Reluctant to let go of college life, a close-knit team of seven friends--irresponsible saxophone player Billy, young Republican Alec, his girlfriend Leslie, struggling journalist Kevin, drama queen Jules, lovesick waiter Kirby, and Wendy, a social worker with a heart of gold--realise the party is over. And as the burdens of maturity close in on the young dreamers, the complexities of adulthood and the daily struggle of growing up put their sacred friendship to the test. But everyone knows life is not a bed of roses. It won't be easy, but when all is said and done, what will it take for St. Elmo's clique to find its place in the real world?
What's left behind the scenes
- Seafarers call St. Elmo's fire the bright glow caused by the accumulation of an electric charge during a thunderstorm, which often appears on the masts and yards of ships. In ancient times, this natural phenomenon had an exclusively mystical interpretation due to a lack of education.
- Martin Balsam and Joyce Van Patten played the roles of Mr. and Mrs. Bimish. And in reality, they were actually married from 1959 to 1962.
- Jodie Foster was offered the role of Jules, but she declined.
- Robert Downey Jr. auditioned for the role of Billy.
- Rising star Demi Moore, who starred in the film, was fired by director Joel Schumacher from the set for arriving intoxicated. She went into treatment and thus stopped taking drugs within a week.
- The main musical composition – the song “St. Elmo’s Fire (Man in Motion)” – was written by Canadian composer David Foster, performed by John Parr, and became an American hit in 1985.
