Short description
For three years after being forced from office, Nixon remained silent. But in summer 1977, the steely, cunning former commander-in-chief agreed to sit for one all-inclusive interview to confront the questions of his time in office and the Watergate scandal that ended his presidency. Nixon surprised everyone in selecting Frost as his televised confessor, intending to easily outfox the breezy British showman and secure a place in the hearts and minds of Americans. Likewise, Frost's team harboured doubts about their boss's ability to hold his own. But as the cameras rolled, a charged battle of wits resulted.
What's left behind the scenes
- Off-set, the actors didn't break character and continued the Frost/Nixon rivalry, constantly bickering and mocking each other. Even when addressing Frank Langella or simply mentioning him, all the cast and crew members used 'Mr. President'.
- Both of the lead actors – Michael Sheen and Frank Langella – embodied in the film images they had previously created on stage. Ron Howard agreed to direct the film only if the studio allowed the same actors to play the main roles.
- Before Ron Howard was chosen as the film's director, the project was of interest to Martin Scorsese, Mike Nichols, George Clooney, Sam Mendes, and Bennett Miller.
- When Frost persuades one of the studio bosses to buy his interview, a poster for M*A*S*H can be seen in the background.
- For his role as Nixon in the original 2007 stage production, Frank Langella was awarded a Tony Award for theatrical performance.
- The film is based on the play of the same name by Peter Morgan.
