What's left behind the scenes
- Amanda Peet and Bridget Moynahan auditioned for the role of Marley.
- In the early stages of the project, in 1997, Edward Norton was a candidate for the role of Nicholas Easter, and Joel Schumacher was to direct. Sean Connery and Gwyneth Paltrow were to play Finch and Marley, respectively. When Schumacher left the project, it was shelved, and the actors took on other projects. The project was revived in 2001 when Will Smith began negotiations for the role of Nicholas Easter, with Jennifer Connelly as Marley and Mike Newell as director. But Smith dropped out of the project, and development stalled again.
- Naomi Watts turned down the role of Marley because she couldn't coordinate her schedule.
- This is the 10th collaboration between John Cusack and Jeremy Piven.
