Short description

An inventor spurns his city life and moves his family into the jungles of Central America to make a utopia.

What's left behind the scenes

  • During casting, River Phoenix was repeatedly rejected for the role of Charlie Fox due to his age (the actor was 15 at the time). When an actor of the appropriate age could not be found, the tape of his audition was resubmitted to the director. Impressed by what he saw, Peter Weir decided that age wasn't such an important factor after all and gave River Phoenix the desired role.
  • During the construction of the film's sets in Belize, the crew discovered an ancient Mayan temple. The Belizean government was informed, and the area was declared a historical monument.
  • Jack Nicholson could have gotten the lead role.
